"Apples and Pears" Nursery and Day Care

A new 10,000 sqft nursery and day care facility for "Apples and Pears" in Smallwood, granted planning permission 2016.  "Apples and Pears" of Pear Tree Farm, Smallwood, is an existing established nursery and day care facility located on a working farm.  Over the years owing to its own popularity as well as pressures faced with new housing being constructed throughout the surrounding local area there was increasing demand for the facility to grow.  James Bell Architecture were appointed to explore possibilities for how the nursery could expand their facility on their current site which included extending the current building as well as creating a new building.  The best option presented itself in the form of an existing cattle shed which could be converted to provide two storeys of accommodation.  The design focused on creating an open plan flexibility and improved flow between age groups to encourage better integration and interaction between children and improved behaviour and sense of responsibility.  The site benefits from lovely views over fields for the children to enjoy and learn about nature.  At first floor there is a training facility with meeting rooms  catering for both in house staff training and for multiple uses during out of nursery hours by the wider community as well as parent groups
